Hey Guys,

While I was away working last week the GTX card I was going for has went back up in price (£150) therefore 280x and 285 cards are looking like a better option for just a little more money (£180-£190)

Do I want to go for a 285 which uses less power but has fewer Stream processors and memory or go for a 280x which has more Stream Processors and memory but uses more power, and if I'm reading things right is getting long in the tooth? - which card give the best value, will the difference be noticable? ANY help appreciated  :) :)

The cards I'm now looking at are XFX cards - does anyone have any experience with them, good bad or indifferent?

The 280x is pre overclocked to 1050MHz and 2048 Streams - £188.64 from Amazon
http://xfxforce.com/en-us/products/amd-radeon-r9-series/amd-radeon-r9-280x-black-double-dissipation-edition-r9-280x-tdbd

The 285 has a clock speed of 975MHz and 1972 Streams - £188.26 from Amazon
http://xfxforce.com/en-us/products/amd-radeon-r9-series/amd-radeon-r9-285-black-edition-r9-285a-cdbc

Thanks, in advance, from a confused IMPz

Don't touch XFX impz their fans are notorious for failing  just outside warranty.  The power colour http://www.scan.co.uk/products/3gb-power-color-amd-radeon-r9-280x-oc-6000mhz-gddr5-gpu-880mhz-boost-1030mhz-2048-streams-dport-dvi- is the one I bought and it is fine for all the games I know it's a bit more than you want to pay but it really is a good card for the price, but thats just my view I'm sure others will stamp all over it if needed  :D

So I finally had to give up my 42inch tv as it didn't want to work anymore so i have downsized to a Samsung curve 32inch

So i woke up this morning to find out a week after i buy my new GPU the bloody 1080 ti comes out and drops the prices of everything. so i rang scan and the person knew right away what i was calling about as he has had quite a few calls about it this morning. so i am returning the 1070 and either getting the 1080 for the same price i paid for the 1070 or i might get the 1080 ti

Distance Selling Regulations to the rescue ;)

I would hold off on a 1080Ti for a short while at least, even if you are in the market for a new GPU now.  They could be extremely good, but I'd want the aftermarket cooler solutions to become mainstream and the first cards will probably be reference design.  Unless you are running 4K resolution the 1070 is still probably the sweet spot card (says the bloke with a 980Ti but then I'm also at 1440p and when I'm not gaming the GPU is flat out on Distributed Computing stuff so the extra grunt is used).

Price drops  may take a couple of days to filter through.  Places like overclockers are already showing the changes.

Yep after the intial Nvidia discounts there seem to be a whole additional raft of manufacturer discounts now arriving on the 1070 and 1080s.  Certainly ASUS and MSI seem to be pushing stuff quite hard on OcUK (haven't looked around anywhere else, as I'm not really in the market).

Waiting to see if I get a tax rebate or not and then also to see how much I have left after getting my car back on the road, and then I will potentially be getting 2x EVGA 1080Ti's.

All made possible by the tax rebate if I get it, but not sure as I think I have earned to much this month in order to get it as I have earned just over £1200 this week, but my car is going to take around £600 to get back on the road as I need insurance, tax and MOT etc.

Why?!

I have a 4k monitor and also plan on getting a Rift or Vive so I actually need the performance that 2 would offer.

Being serious surely a single 1080Ti can do 4K and / or VR stuff at a decent frame rate (faster than your eyes can see any difference)?

Of course you are perfectly entitled to go for 2 cards, just questioning whether for us mortals one is enough.

If not then when will the Graphics card manufacturer's actually do something that will match monitor capabilities?

Surely a single Ti would be more than capable? (not by any means questioning your desire for one)

Not for me I like to crank the settings as high as possible, so I want all the FPS I can get whilst having it look really good.

The 2 980Ti's I have now can cope with some games, like Elite, Battlefield 1 and a few others at 4K maxed out but I want to be able to play The Division at 4K and also be able to reduce the stutter in the Elite and Battlefield 1 as they use a fair bit of ram on the gpu at 4K maxed out.
