A New Look
« on: 23 July 2012, 10:28: AM »
It's been a while coming, but we're breaking away from the standard SMF light blue theme so we truly have a site with our own identity.  :tu:

Our new colour scheme is designed around olive and brown backgrounds, in various hues, with text primarily in shades of yellow and orange.  We've tried to go towards a darker theme, as it is a bit moodier and more in keeping with a gaming style, but we wanted to be a bit different and not follow the herd of sites that primarily use charcoal skins.  We've also tried to keep things with reasonable levels of contrast, although at times that might seem just a tad too bright.

The theme has been written entirely by ourselves, rather than trying to import a new scheme designed by others.  Thus it is unique to NTHW.  Some elements rely on CSS3 styling, such as use of rounded corners.  Most modern browsers should handle that, and as a gaming site, we expect most of our users have reasonably current software.  If you are still using things like Internet Explorer 6, the site should still display, but without refinement and perhaps with a couple of oddities.

There may still be a few tweaks to be made here and there.  Some inbuilt images, and some of the smileys don't look too good against the darker background.  There may also be some oddities in the less used areas of the board.  If you come across an issue, let us know.

For those of you who really don't like it, you can select the default SMF theme by selecting the "Profile" button then Look and Layout, and then change current theme.  We don't promise though that everything will be working nicely on that style as it largely exists as legacy.

We know change is often a bit uncomfortable, but once you have used the scheme for a while, we hope you'll like it. :)

no offence to all your hard work but to a colourblind fella like myself it looks revolting, I am sure the rest of ya love it but thank god you allowed the user to choose

Zingle, it would be interesting to be able to simulate what you are experiencing to understand if it's just the contrast, or perhaps, lack of shade variations, you simply can't differentiate parts of the site, or something else. :(  Obviously if this is a serious problem, then there may need to be a rethink as it could affect others too.  We wouldn't wish to do any re-design and yet repeat the mistake, so we need to understand what doesn't work to then understand what can work.

The theme had been in development test within the clan for a couple of months and this hadn't been something anyone had raised as issues.  Indeed our now defunct vbulletin based site scheme had quite a few dark green and brown colourings with orangey text, albeit often different shades than the ones now used, and this hadn't been raised over there as a problem.

Hi MGP,

This site does colour-blindness simulation - lots of different colour blindness filters to choose from.

http://colorfilter.wickline.org/

Just pop in the URL select the filter and off ya go. :D

That in it's default makes the site display very green.  But it's clear there are lots of alternative setting options for that filter.  I note that the default SMF colours can be a bit odd, especially some of their orange fonts.  Don't think there is an easy option here unless a web design becomes truly monochromatic.
