@ Dilli & other old gits - Elite is re-born!
« on: 13 December 2012, 01:48: PM »
New multiplayer enabled and updated version of Elite is coming in Q1 of 2014 - developed by David Braben and his team

Details available at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous

I really can't wait for this. Loved the original on my speccy, loved Frontier, and love Oolite - this looks like it's going to be something special (hopefully)

I would pledge but it does not look good enough for me, whilst it looks a fun game I am a graphics whore and I am sorry but there are free graphics engines out there that they could use to make this look so much better, but it would appear they have chosen to use the old Quake 3 engine.

I hope it get's done for those of you who want it though.

I think you have to be of a certain age to be really excited about this particular game.

I've probably spent more hours playing the game on my ZX Spectrum than any other game ever.

I still fire it up now and again on my spectrum emulator.

you need to whip up the deep heat to form something like candy floss to put on the cocktail stick ;)

There is a a balance that should be struck between gameplay, i.e. how long should something hold a players interest and keep them wanting more of the challenge, and simply a glossy front.  Many of the early computerised games were simple in their display because the tech allowed no more, but equally they hooked the player with an easily understood purpose of what needed to be done whilst that need allowed many depths.   Elite was clearly one of those latter games.  Even today we see many games of old tech ported as freebies onto platforms some as facebook and work very well not because of graphics but because they have a long lasting hook to maintain interest.  One can only hope that a reboot of Elite retains focus on the game rather than worry about a feelgood factor, albeit that without a modern glossy appearance a game is going to be dismissed by too many of it's potential audience.

My interest is part nostalgia for the 'good old days' of Elite, and part interest in the new features being brought to the game - especially the multiplayer aspect - we could only dream of that back in 1984 and I do remember discussing how amazing it would be with my school friends back then. So for me, this is a childhood wish that could well come true.

The graphics and physics engines only really need to be 'good enough', though Braben has said he will try to make the game as nice looking as possible on more powerful machines. Also nice to see this is an all-out PC game, with the idea of console ports being secondary, and possibly only coming much later.

Braben has also stated he wishes to make the game 'moddable' to the gaming community at a later stage as well.

I for one commend these efforts.

Is there a emulator for it.

There is also Oolite - which is a community-based free game - basically a direct copy of the original Elite with a few extras for the PC.
It retains all the aspects of the original, and also allows customization and modding - there are loads of mods, missions and other add-ons available - and all completely FREE!
