wish i'd never got that xda & what next
i could well be in the market for a new phone if i get the nod from o2 cs. sit back, grab a beer and i'll explain.
last year (under the recomendation of a shop staff member - for which i need sectioning) i got an xda zest. this was my first foray into winmo (and now my last), and was also going to be used for work as all i was supplied was a crappy sammy extreme phone. anyway, within the first few weeks of having it i was having problems. various issues include - the first that battery wouldn't hold charge for more than a few hours - i'm currently on my 4th battery so i'm pretty sure that not all the batteries are duff. the 3g signal reception is up and down like a pro's you know what's. where i work the 3g signal is quite strong, but most of the time i'll be lucky to get a decent gprs signal - even though my mate (who has an iphone) has no issues at all stood next to me. next ie and opera decided that they were going to stop working, i managed to get ie to work again (but i hate ie with a passion on winmo) but opera was having none of it. in the end i've had to install another version to get some internet access. now though the camels back has been broken. with my phone now having hissy fits maybe once a day and locking up. now i don't know that it's happened unless i need to make a call or txt - it refuses to do either untill i've pulled the battery out and done a hard reset on it. but while it's having one of these fits the phone deosn't ring or alert me if someone calls or txt's me. now when i took it back to the o2 store - about 3-4 weeks for the first battery issue and a couple of months later with the software issue they wern't really intrested. then the old plop came out that because i didn't take the insurance out (and even then said it wouldn't be guaranteed to be swapped) that it'd have to be sent away and tested - but i could have a temp replacement............for £25 . i just walked out the store as i was fuming. funny thing is that not long afterwards the xda's were dropped.my contract can't be changed until novemeber, but o2 don't seem to want to budge on the issue. but this has been an ongoing issue for 12 months and the phone hasn't been working properly in those 12 months. and now that i'm self employed i need a working phone. i spoke to retentions and again not really intrested much, advising to buy a new phone and then change the plan to a simplicity deal when my contract ends or buy out the rest of my deal - which is about £140, so it feels like i'm being screwed either way. so i'm currently waiting on their mycare team to get in touch to see what my next step will be. what would be the reccomendations for what's available? and please no winmo phones - had enough of them. have seen the sammy galaxy s in store and it looks neat, in appearance it's almost an iphone without being one but with a few little software teething troubles (what doesn't). and after all my denial and swearing i wouldn't get one, another serious contender would be a 3gs. one might assume that with the release of the 4g, that prices should make their way downward for the 3gs....... well not everyone seems to have gotten that idea http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/APPLE-IPHONE-3...item35aa23c61f £750 for a 16gb 3gs - mind you there are gulible people outhere who would pay that - just look at the rush and prices for the 4g and ipad.......all because it's apple. next would be what are the best providers? i have been really satisfied with o2 (and before that cellnet - my number i've had for at least 10 years) until this debarcle. if they get their fingers out of their arses i might well stay, but who else is good at the moment? |

Re: wish i'd never got that xda & what next
strange, i had a XDA Zest and before that an orbit 2 had no problems with either of them. i just bored and changed to an iphone. i would say i've been with o2 about 6 years myself and always found them to be really helpful. i know the orbit 2 was made by HTC and the Zest was made by ASUS. ass for what to go for not got a clue. vodafone i think are pretty decent my missuis is with them and not heard her complain about anything yet.

Re: wish i'd never got that xda & what next
I've been outta the xda scene for years now but used to love the cosomability hacking that could be done, maybe a custom rom would fix the issues, check out xda-developers.com.
Like I say, been out of the xda winmo for years so not fully afay with it now,but if anyone can help, they can. And by the by, I'm getting shot of the iphone asap and going with winmo or android............................. we're all having probs by the sound of it

The 'real' releases have always had problems, that's why I used to play with custom roms, lots of bits taken out and others added, some were very very nice

Re: wish i'd never got that xda & what next
well it looks like the phone is gonna have an accident - with my contents insurance to the rescue. o2 are begining to turn in to a right bunch of knobheads (what is it with the spanish? as soon as they get involved, things go to pot).
it doen't look like they are going to budge on the sent/repair option. so that'll leave me with no phone as i'll be buggered if i'm gonna pay for a temp one . even told them i'd do a fresh contract in exchange for a new working phone - but looking unlikely they'll go for it - one word.........tossers

Re: wish i'd never got that xda & what next
well looks like they can be sensible after all. got a reduction in the termination fee (got a somewhere in the region of a third reduction), so i've changed my consumer account on to the business account (mainly so i can get my tax reduced at the end of the year) with a semi decent tariff (free o2-o2 and landline calls, although the unlimited data ends in sept like all others for a 750mb limit - not likely to use all that but might get near) for £30+vat pm. so i'm just waiting for my account & number to be ported and then a nice new shiny galaxy s is on the way
...................at last a phone that will work (i hope) and should get better with the froyo update available in the next few weeks.i went for the galaxy over the desire for a few reasons. first is the andriod updates, the 2.2 froyo is gonna be available from samsung in the next few weeks, where as with htc there is no confirmed release date - although there are rumours that say it's going to be available anywhere from the next few weeks to the end of the year. then there is the screen, i had a butchers in the local o2 store and my god what a screen - and not the 4 inches of it. bright and virbrant. and then there was price, although the phone was free - there was a one off charge of neraly £50 for the desire. but the galaxy was free free free (in a manner of speaking). |

Re: wish i'd never got that xda & what next
well it turned up at work this morning, and they are still a bit useless - i asked for the tracking no to be emailed to me - i gave them my address twice and still they failed to get me the details. luckily i was in the workshop to take delivery (if it wasn't here by tomorrow i was gonna cancel the order)
my god, the screen is even brighter than the display one in the shop. touchscreen is lovely and responsive. got a million and 1 opttions and settings to sort out on it so maybe an early-ish night to crash on the sofa witha beer (or morgans spice 'n' lemmo) and have a good play with it - but thus far very impressed with it..................and i can see why samsung have got a thing going on twitter (although i don't know how or who gets) that they will give dis-satisfied ip4 customers a galaxy s.........how to get great advertising and piss over a major competitor is one easy step ![]() and the only downside is................i never got the 16gb version, although the 8gb was supplied with a free 8gb micro sd card and adaptor - happy days. |

i've never had a play with the desire (no pun intended ), but you wouldn't be dissapointed with the galaxy dilli (and you'd know as you've played with it). it's so responsive - sometimes a little to much when i'm being a bit quick with the fingers. and compared to this, an ip3gs or 4 would have been madness me thinks.
