Spam Prevention
« on: 24 April 2012, 11:46: AM »
Unfortunately experience has shown us that there are far too many people out there who see message boards as an opportunity for free advertising.  >:(

We will not allow our site to be used for spam.  If you wish to spam, go elsewhere, your posts will be deleted and your account banned.  But since you are a spammer you won't really care or even take the time to read this will you :(

As a comparatively small website, we get a disproportionate number of spammer visits and registrations compared to genuine users.  Automated bots particularly cause a lot of hassle and sometimes can attempt to both register and post from multiple accounts in a day swiftly overwhelming us.

NTHW employs a number of measures to deter spamming.  Some are automated software processes behind the scenes, some are simple blocks placed on IP addresses and email domains.  Regrettably the final defence has to be use of verification images and random questions at registration and for the first few post counts.  We try to strike a balance, and do review our measures from time to time.

We hope the antispam defences we employ are not too onerous on our genuine users and that you understand the reasons for our caution.

Perhaps you can put this explanation on the registration page?

Perhaps you can put this explanation on the registration page?

That would require some technical expertise to know what part(s) of the forum software needed to be hacked

The catchpa is whatever is supplied by SMF, which is probably not that strong (most catchpas get broken sooner or later), and so supplemented by other stuff, such as a few questions.  The post is more for information because a couple of recent new registrants have been a bit surprised by our measures.  They do work though as our old vbulletin forum averaged a spam registration a day with postings to match, where here it is less than one a fortnight.  After all we run this site because we want to have fun, not because we want to spend all our time administering it ;)
